Each week we are posting a cartoon exclusive to the EON sites only. Here is this weeks
Love them or hate them, it’s hard to find a group of car guys more entertaining than the hosts of the BBC program Top Gear.
Those challenge videos make me wish I had an extra $200,000 laying around. But there’s one thing that’s always rubbed me the wrong way with Top Gear, and it’s the show’s take on Americans.
The main host, Jeremy Clarkson’s take specifically. In 2006, Clarkson wrote:
"We have an image of the American motorist, his big flobbery stomach, flobbering from state to state in a big, flobbery car with big flobbery suspension at a flobbery 55mph.
"For many years, I’ve argued that the heart of the average American motorist beats approximately once every 15 minutes. Technically, they’re in a coma.
"I know of no country in the world where motorists are so intolerant of one another. The slightest mistake causes at the very least a great deal of horn blowing and, at worst, a three-second burst from some kind of powerful automatic weapon."
Ha ha ha. Of course the British hosts of a British car show are going to poke fun at those inferior cars — and drivers — from across the pond.
But what’s interesting is that the bias has seeped into Clarkson’s reviews of Chevrolet’s cars over the years, especially the Corvette. I know it`s not trucks, but here`s a look at some of the Corvette reviews and challenges that have made its way onto Top Gear.
He couldn’t resist this dig in his review of the Corvette Z06 -http://youtu.be/Ko9k...
Despite what he pointed out as flimsy construction, Clarkson seemed to like the Corvette C6 ZR1 in a 2008 trip through California -http://youtu.be/rZse...
However, he corrected himself one year later in a test drive comparing the C6 ZR1 to Audi’s R8 V10 Coupe. Clarkson apparently just couldn’t keep his wheels going in a consistent direction - youtube= http://youtu.be/l5upR...
But have things finally changed?
Top Gear’s Tom Ford recently praised the brand new Corvette Stingray in a head-to-head comparison with the Porsche 911. The piece had its share of playful ribbing, naturally, but in the end, Ford had to concede that this Corvette model was legit.
"Flat out, no caveats. The new Corvette can hold its head up with anything on the market. Yes, that’s on UK roads, and on the inside, too."
