November 24, 2000Me and my friend cant decide what is better for off roading. We both have 2wd. i like auto becuase i can pay more attention to my driving and not have to worry about what gear im in whe flying through the desert and railing my truck off jumps. He likes it cuz you can pick the gear you want as you climb a hill...what do you guys think is better?
November 24, 2000Auto is the only way to go, this way you can keep both hands on the wheel and be able to out maneuver the guy with a stick, and this way you don`t have to worry about a clutch going bad.
November 25, 2000As things go the old auto or stick war still go`s on. The best answer is what suits your style best, with a shift kit the auto is just as handy to select a gear for hill climing, on the performance side if your power plant is not built then the few hores`s that the auto takes may be a factor.
you decide the trade off.
November 26, 2000I drive them both and they both have their advantages. Sticks are nice going down steep hills, especially if you have a granny low, since you can use engine compression to slow you instead of riding the brakes. Automatics are more convenient and you don`t get caught in the situation where one gear seems too low and another seems too high. Sticks also require less attention, just keep them full of gear lube and you are fine. Automatics require a little more attention to the fluid level and keeping them cool. But then you don`t have to worry about the clutch going bad in an auto..... Like I said, they both have advantages and disadvantages.
November 26, 2000I love my standard it will leave a auto at a light standard=straight power! no power loss through torque converter
November 27, 2000Own a automatic right now NEVER WILL AGAIN!! Its in a 93 Extra Cab Toyota my dad gave me. This thing had 109,935 on it when I got it. The tranny in 2 words: WELL DONE. It was rebuilt once, only to be rebuilt again 7 months later. Holding out since then (Feb.), but once I get my 79 CHEVY going (4spd, granny low) never going back to a slush box.
November 29, 2000STICK OR NOTHIN` A stick requrires more driver skill in certain situations but will always hold it own against an auto. Auto heat up and flat out burn up when used hard. I know you can get coolers for that but bottom line is they still suck. Autos have little to no compression braking ability whick can lead to some downright scary hill desents. When an auto goes you aint goin` nowhere. If a manual breaks you can typically limp home minus a gear or so. You just cant beat a good stick w/ a granny low.
December 1, 2000I have always owned a stick and have never burn`t a clutch, Clutch life is in the drivers hands.
December 1, 2000I read an article about it in Fourwheeler magazine, maybe "Rockcrawler" can quote it for us, as he does so well.
PS, I like an automatic, it`s easier for me.
December 16, 2000auto......just my 2 cents
