February 21, 2005I am worried that 35" tires will be too much for my 99 Sierra lifted 5" with 3:73 gear. The motor is a 5.3. So, instead of putting a 4:10 gear in it, what if I put a chip in it instead, to get more horsepower? Do you think this would make up for the 3:73 gear ratio?

February 21, 2005nope, you'd be better off getting the gears. trust me...I tried this.
February 22, 2005it still had no guts, and got shatty gas mileage. You can't correct incorrect gearing with adding fuel (which is what a chip does is increase fuel, among other things).
you really need to regear if you plan on boosting your performance and mpg's.
February 23, 2005I had 3:42 gears in a 96 tahoe with 35 inch tires and it was bearable. I think with 3:73s you'll be OK. You'll lose some performance and fuel mileage but I doubt it will be so unbearable as to justify a $1500 or higher gear swap. Just my opinion.
If, for whatever reason, you need to return to stock tires you'll be killing the truck with low gears and stock tires especially at highway speed. Just some food for thought.
February 23, 2005true, chris.
I mean, I have 35's on my 3.54's, but it is annoying when you have to punch it to climb the slightest hill. If your truck has a strong motor in it, you outta be ok, but if it is already weak, you are going to want gears.
a chip will help, but gears are unbeatable in my opinion. Make sure that you want to run big tires forever, or else like Chris said, you'll regret the $1000 gear job. (my local shop will do front and rear gears for a grand installed)
September 20, 2005A good alternative would be a nice shift kit w/a long second gear if you're running an automagic. A shift lockout would also help.
January 6, 2006I have a sierra 1500 with 3.73s, an aem intake, and a superchips tuner, and my truck'll get on her with the 35x14.50's im running let alone on 18x10 m/t classic locks. Oh and straight pipe duals. I'd like to get gears eventually, but just thought id let you how mine has worked out. I get about 12 mpg if im a considerate driver
